Giving women with breast cancer a shorter course of radiotherapy may be BETTER, study finds

Women with breast cancer get as much benefit from three weeks of radiotherapy treatment as from the international standard five-week course, research has found.
And fewer trips to hospital mean patients suffer less fatigue.
The ‘less is more’ regime can generate cost savings for the NHS and paves the way for research that could see treatment time fall further to just one week’s radiotherapy.
While relapse rates for women on the shorter course were the same as those on the longer one, the damage caused to healthy tissue was far less
While relapse rates for women on the shorter course were the same as those on the longer one, the damage caused to healthy tissue was far less
The shorter course of 15 treatments was adopted by many British hospitals in 2008, but doubts remained about longer-term benefits.

BOWEL TEST COULD CUT DEATHS

Two out of five bowel cancers could be prevented if older people had colonoscopy screening every ten years, say researchers.
The procedure allows a doctor to look inside the colon, or large bowel, for cancerous growths using a long flexible tube.
A new study suggests it is the most effective preventive measure against a cancer that is diagnosed in 41,000 Britons each year and which kills 16,000.
The research by Harvard School of Public Health studied 1,815 cases of colorectal cancer and 474 deaths from the disease, as reported in the New England Journal of Medicine.
It found that both colonoscopy and the similar sigmoidoscopy (which uses a smaller tube) were associated with a lower risk of getting colorectal cancer or dying from it.
But only colonoscopy cut the risk for cancers in the proximal or upper part of the colon.
The researchers estimated that if all participants in the study had undergone colonoscopies, 40 per cent of colorectal cancers would have been prevented.
The latest findings, published in The Lancet Oncology journal, build on results from a five-year trial of radiotherapy given to 4,500 British women after surgery for early breast cancer.
The ten-year follow-up confirms the benefits from the earlier trial, including an unexpected small improvement in survival for those on the short course.
It shows the relapse rates of cancer within the same breast are similar to the international standard course, but with significantly less harm to healthy tissue.
‘We’ve shown conclusively that less can be more in breast cancer radiotherapy,’ said chief investigator John Yarnold, professor of clinical oncology at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) and honorary consultant at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.
‘Both breast cancer recurrence and the side-effects of radiotherapy can occur many years after treatment, so these long-term results provide an important reassurance that the shorter treatment course is the best option for patients.’
The same team is now setting out to investigate whether even fewer doses of radiotherapy could be just as effective, as part of a new trial of 4,000 women called Fast-Forward.
The trial will compare the new standard 15-dose course of radiotherapy treatment, delivered over three weeks, with an even shorter five-dose course, over one week.

Kate Law, director of clinical trials at Cancer Research UK, which funded the latest research, said: ‘What’s really exciting is that as a result of this trial women are already benefiting from the added physical and emotional wellbeing of needing fewer hospital visits for their treatment.
Four out of five women who find a lump and have surgery also undergo radiotherapy treatment
Four out of five women who find a lump and have surgery also undergo radiotherapy treatment
‘Minimising the long-term side effects of treatment is becoming increasingly important as more cancer patients live longer.’
At present, radiotherapy is offered to all women who have breast conserving surgery – around 30,000 a year – where just the lump is removed rather than the whole breast.
Four out of five have treatment which kills any remaining tumour cells in the breast.
Sally Greenbrook, of Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity, said: ‘Many UK hospitals have already adopted this shorter regime, and this study confirms that the NHS is providing the best possible care to UK patients.’

Makeup Ideas: Candy Pink Lipstick

If you've got great lips, bringing attention to them with a fantastic lipstick shade is a brilliant idea, as these great looks show!

Candy Pink Lipstick

Alessandra Torresani hairstyles
A candy pink lipstick color is right on trend at the moment and will really allow you to bring your look to life with a great punch of color. For those who are a little hesitant, start with a lighter variation of the shade, as shown here. This lipstick color is bright, but not too bright. It has just enough color to highlight the lips and bring out some natural pink tones in the skin but isn't too over powering. Matching the lipstick to some temporary fun highlights in your hair is also a great idea if you want a tie your whole look together.

Debby Ryan hairstyles
For those not afraid to make their lipstick the focus of their look, a deep bold candy pink is ideal. Your lipstick application needs to be perfect to pull off this look, so ensure your lips are free of flakes and well moisturized. Then apply your lipstick with a lip brush for precision, and don't forget to apply a primer or a light coating of foundation over your lips first to help keep the lipstick on your lips, and looking perfect.

Sandra Bullock hairstyles
For a romantic finish, team your pink lipstick with a slight sheen of lip gloss and some slightly blushed cheeks in a similar color. If you can't find the right blush shade, work a small amount of the lipstick into your cheekbones, remembering to blend, blend, blend. With any of these candy pink looks, keeping the rest of your makeup as pulled back as possible will help to show off your lip color, and give you a fantastic overall finish.

Makeup Ideas for Red Hair Colors

When you've got the right hair color, it's easy to pull off a great look. One way to really ensure that your look is on point is to also complement your hair color with the right makeup. For some great makeup ideas that will bring out the best in a dark or light red hair colors, give these ideas a try!

Light Red Hair Color

Debby Ryan hairstylesWhen you've got a light hair color, you can play it up with some more dramatic makeup looks. The key though, is to ensure that you don't overdo it. A look similar to the one seen here on light redhead Debby Ryan is ideal. Her foundation is applied flawlessly, there's minimal color on her eyes and cheeks and she's highlighted her best features - her eyes and lips - with a punch of color. The black eyeliner winged out across her top lash line, the lashings of black mascara and the fantastic bold pink lipstick brings attention but doesn't overdo it. The color choices also work with her red hair color and don't clash against it. A red lipstick would have been a go-to color for bringing out the lips, but she played it smart by choosing pink instead so her lipstick wasn't competing with her hair color.

Dark Red Hair Color

Reba McEntire hairstylesFor makeup to suit your dark hair color, keep to light, natural tones and you'll be onto a winning look. Reba McEntire knows the key to playing up her dark hair color is applying perfectly blended foundation as a great base. A natural peach blush on the cheeks will bring some color to your face and isn't red enough to clash with your hair color. Keep your lips just as neutral with a light pink color and plenty of gloss. For the eyes, make them your feature and line them with dark eyeliner, black mascara, remembering to curl your lashes to make them stand out, and then apply a shimmer shade subtly on the inner corners and around the lash lines of each eye. This will add a youthful touch to your eye area.

Mascara:

Hair: mascara can be used to cover over grey hair in an emergency. If you have black or brown hair and have a mascara color to match, lightly blend it over any grey hairs to cover them up until you can get to the salon.
Beauty: old mascara brushes make great eyebrow groomers. Clean up old brushes with makeup remover and then keep them to help brush your brows into place.

Vaseline:

Hair: vaseline is essential for when you're coloring your hair at home. Smooth a small amount around your hairline and it will help to keep dye off your skin.
Beauty: vaseline is one versatile little beauty product. It can be used as a moisturizer on tough areas such as your knees, and is perfect for keeping your lips subtle and moist. Pop some on morning and night after brushing your teeth and your lips should always be smooth and lipstick ready.

Hairspray:

Hair: hairspray is of course used to keep your style in place.
Beauty: hairspray is also ideal for getting your brows into place. Spray some onto your eyebrow brush and then comb over your brows so they'll look great all day.

Hair Shampoo:

Hair: shampoo is of course the best product for keeping your locks healthy and clean.
Beauty: hair shampoo is also perfect for keeping your makeup brushes clean. Add a small amount of shampoo to warm water, clean your brushes and then lay them flat to air dry. Do this at least once a month to keep your beauty tools in check and free from skin-clogging bacteria.

The Enigma of Beauty

Sheli Jeffry is searching for beauty. As a scout for Ford, one of the world's top model agencies, Jeffry scans up to 200 young women every Thursday afternoon. Inside agency headquarters in New York, exquisite faces stare down from the covers of Vogue, Glamour, and Harper's Bazaar. Outside, young hopefuls wait for their big chance.
Jeffry is looking for height: at least five feet nine (1.8 meters). She's looking for youth: 13 to 19 years old. She's looking for the right body type.
What is the right body type?
"Thin," she says. "You know, the skinny girls in school who ate all the cheeseburgers and milk shakes they wanted and didn't gain an ounce. Basically, they're hangers for clothes."
In a year, Jeffry will evaluate several thousand faces. Of those, five or six will be tested. Beauty pays well. A beginning model makes $1,500 a day; those in the top tier, $25,000; stratospheric supermodels, such as Naomi Campbell, four times that.
Jeffry invites the first candidate in.
"Do you like the camera?" she asks Jessica from New Jersey. "I love it. I've always wanted to be a model," Jessica says, beaming like a klieg light.
Others seem less certain. Marsha from California wants to check out the East Coast vibes, while Andrea from Manhattan wants to know if she has what it takes to be a runway star. (Don't give up a sure thing like a well-paying Wall Street job for this roll of the dice, Jeffry advises.)
The line diminishes. Faces fall and tears well as the refrain "You're not what we're looking for right now" extinguishes the conversation—and hope.
You're not what we're looking for …
Confronted with this, Rebecca from Providence tosses her dark hair and asks: "What are you looking for? Can you tell me exactly?"
Jeffry meets the edgy, almost belligerent, tone with a composed murmur. "It's hard to say. I know it when I see it."
What is beauty? We grope around the edges of the question as if trying to get a toe-hold on a cloud.
"I'm doing a story on beauty," I tell a prospective interview. "By whose definition?" he snaps.
Define beauty? One may as well dissect a soap bubble. We know it when we see it—or so we think. Philosophers frame it as a moral equation. What is beautiful is good, said Plato. Poets reach for the lofty. "Beauty is truth, truth beauty," wrote John Keats, although Anatole France thought beauty "more profound than truth itself."
Others are more concrete. "People come to me and say: 'Doctor, make me beautiful,'" a plastic surgeon reveals. "What they are asking for is high cheekbones and a stronger jaw."
Science examines beauty and pronounces it a strategy. "Beauty is health," a psychologist tells me. "It's a billboard saying 'I'm healthy and fertile. I can pass on your genes."

OK! Magazine Apologizes For Its Kate Middleton Diet Issue

Give the lady a break: Just a day after Kate Middleton gave birth to her son and heir Prince George Alexander Louis, the British tabloid OK! published a cover devoted entirely to if, when, and how the Duchess of Cambridge would get rid of her unsightly post-baby weight.

Guys, chill out.

After the issue was released, British television presenter Kate Hill (pictured) launched a campaign calling on moms to boycott OK!. "I think all mums should boycott @OK Magazine for this cover ONE DAY after #Kate has given birth. REALLY?" she wrote on Twitter. A moment later, she wrote, "New Mums. If the @OK Magazine cover has made you feel bad, here's me 2 months post baby. YOU MADE A HUMAN! x."

Hill's campaign worked, and OK! came forward to apologize for trying to defy the laws of nature and the rules of propriety. The mag's owner, Richard Desmond, issued the following statement: "Kate is one of the great beauties of our age and OK! readers love her. Like the rest of the world, we were very moved by her radiance as she and William introduced the Prince of Cambridge to the world. We would not dream of being critical of her appearance. If this was misunderstood because of our cover it was not intended."

Uh-huh. If anything good has come out of this, it's that Hill's Twitter campaign has helped other women feel better about their post-partum bodies. She reports that dozens of women have now felt empowered to share what their post-pregnancy bellies really look like. So kudos for Kate(s)!
